Scholarships to Study Abroad


USM's MeRTEC and Honors Programs are excited to announce a unique scholarship opportunity for USM students interested in spending a semester abroad in Iceland and Norway. Four USM students will be selected through a competitive application process to earn a $7,000 scholarship (each!) to study abroad. 

Two students will have the opportunity to study at Reykjavik University, and new this year, two additional students will be selected to study abroad at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, Campus Tromsø. All four students will also have the opportunity to intern with an Icelandic and Norwegian company during the Spring 2020 semester.

Who can apply?
The scholarship application is open to students who have completed at least one of the pre-requisites and meet the general study abroad minimum qualifications.

Pre-Requisites:
- HON195: Honors Abroad
- Any MeRTEC course
- Any short-term travel program to Iceland (BUS, MeRTEC, TAH/GYA, etc.)

Study Abroad Qualifications:
- You must be a matriculated degree candidate with a declared major. You cannot study abroad if you are an undeclared student.
- You must have completed a minimum of 24 undergraduate credits prior to your departure. (If you are a transfer student please contact the Office of International Programs for information on additional application requirements.)

Deadline?
All applications for Spring '20 study abroad must be received by the USM Office of International Programs by Friday, October 4th. The application has multiple parts, don't wait until the last minute to get started!

Do I need a visa to study in Iceland and Norway?
Yes, you need a visa (and passport) to study in Iceland and Norway since you will be in the country for longer than 90 days. 

Timeline:
- October 4, 2019: Scholarship application deadline
- November 4, 2019: Visa application must be received in Iceland
- First week of January 2020: Orientation at Reykjavik University (RU) and UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, Campus Tromsø
- Mid-late May 2020: Final Exams at RU
- Early-mid June 2020:  Final Exams at UiT
How/Where?
Complete the application and submit it on or before Friday, October 4, 2019.
